Ways to Wear: Neon

It seems as though neon colours have been everywhere I've looked lately. At first I was a little bit put off by how garish some looks and outfit ideas appeared at first glance, but the more I've looked at the trend the more its grown on me, especially when bright and geeky accessories are involved!

After an initial desperate want to avoid anything too bright and not wanting to stick out amongst the general greyness that is everywhere, I started to yearn for something with a little more colour and a little less 'January'. After flicking through magazines and blog posts I found some great inspiration on how to wear neons but nothing seemed me enough to go out and actually try putting a neon outfit together, so I decided to put a blog post together sharing how I'd put together a neon infused look.

I've got for too different looks today. The first is for more of an introduction to neons. If you're anything like me the ideas of throwing on lots of reflective colours is a little daunting, unless of course it's for a Day-Glo party. The second outfit it a lot brighter and for people who are more comfortable in bright colours. If I had the legs for skinny jeans this would be a favourite spring/summer outfit.

After a lot of playing with colour combinations and outfit options here's what I came up with.

Shirt - Next | Blazer - H&M | Earrings - New Look | Shoes - Sarenza | Skirt - New York

As I said before, I wanted this first outfit be suitable for an introduction to neon colours. The base of the outfit is quite dark, although the polka dot pattern on the sheer shirt breaks up the solid black and grey. By adding a bright jacket you always have the option of losing the neon colours if you decide you feel a little uncomfortable after a while of wearing it. I know I regularly leave wearing outfits that are more outgoing than usual and after being out of the house for a while wish I could change into something a little more like me.

I've also used the shoes to introduce some more colour into this outfit. Like the jacket, the shoes aren't a high-vis style neon, but have enough colour to initially get used to wearing fluorescent colours without having to dive straight into the deep end.

Belt - Topshop | Top - New Look | Brooch - Topshop | Jeans - New Look | Bag - Zatchels

This outfit is something I'd love to have the confidence, and the body, to wear. I've kept the amount of colours in this outfit to a minimum whilst still keeping with the neon theme. A lot of outfits I've seen have used lots of various neon colours in one look and, for me at least, it just comes across as way over the top and rather garish.

The blue jeans keep the bottom half of this outfit relatively simple, but still stand out from your usual blue denim jeans. I've then contrasted this with neon yellow accessories to add that burst of colour and almost clash against the base of the outfit. Accessories like chunky necklaces and bracelets would be great in this outfit, adding in splashes of colour against the white peplum top without going overboard by layering neons on top of more neons.

what advice do you have for wearing outfits with neon colours? I've seen a lot of people look great in bright colours but so many disasters too. How would you avoid it all going wrong?
